Catholic Kelly stands by stem cell policy

London Telegraph | Feb 2 2005

Ruth Kelly, the Education Secretary, said yesterday that her strong Catholic beliefs would not affect her readiness to implement Government policy on stem cell research.

Miss Kelly's religious convictions have become a subject of debate after she confirmed that she received guidance from the ultra-conservative Opus Dei movement within the Catholic Church.

As Education Secretary she has responsibility for millions of pounds in Government money a year for research into stem cells, which the Catholic Church opposes.

Miss Kelly, 36, said yesterday that she stood by the Government's decision to promote stem cell research. "

We have a 10-year science strategy; we have a policy toward stem cell research," she told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. "I completely accept that. I am a member of this Government and I will not only stand by the policies but also, where I am responsible for implementing them, I will implement them as well."

She declined to discuss her involvement with Opus Dei, saying that she had a right to a private life.
