Communists Threaten Nationwide Protest Over Russia-U.S. Military Exercise

The Russian Communist Party (CPRF) leadership has demanded that Russian authorities call off the joint Russian-U.S. exercise Torgau 2006, and announced that a nationwide protest is to be staged on September 14, the Interfax news agency reports.

“The Communists oppose sabre-rattling on our (Russian) soil by the army that bombed the sovereign Yugoslavia, trampled the statehood of several countries in the Middle East, and is trying by hook or by crook to perpetuate its military presence in the territory of the former Soviet Union,” says a resolution by the secretariat of the CPRF Central Committee, issued in Moscow on Tuesday.

The press service of the CPRF faction in the Russian Parliament has told Interfax that the secretariat adopted a resolution “On a nationwide protest action against the staging of the Torgau 2006 Russian-U.S. exercise,” which says this joint exercise is planned for the second half of September at the Mulino training range in the Nizhniy Novgorod Region.

It also states their intention to hold on September 14 a nationwide protest action against the planned exercise, for which purpose a protest action headquarters has been set up.
