Eyewitness reports of the shooting

Monday April 16, 2007
“I saw all the cop cars. I heard someone say that there
were shots fired and I immediately tried to get out of that area.
I heard shots fired and everyone ran across the drill field and
I started running to my dorm … I think a lot of people here
are still in shock and I don’t think we really comprehend
what has gone on.” Virginia Tech junior Alex Senonite on CNN
“We were just standing there on the steps and the cops showed
up with their guns and they got on the megaphone and were making
announcements. It was really windy and it was really hard to hear
them … Eventually it was 11:15 or 11:30 and we were on the
second floor in a classroom watching the news and these cops came
up with rifles and stuff and they told us that there had been a
bomb threat in some other buildings.” Student Jason Piatt
on CNN
“It’s just shock and anger around here right now,”
graduate student Elizabeth Stewart on CNN. She said she saw the
shootings as “freak incidents” that would not stop her
attending Virginia Tech: “I love my school with all my heart
and soul.”
“The first thing I saw was when the policemen taking their
guns out and then I knew that this was serious. I hadn’t heard
of the shooting … And then I started hearing the gunshots
from far away … There was a person in the building on the
second floor trying to tell the cops that he was in there and trying
to direct them … Someone was shouting to leave the grounds
and I didn’t understand how I could leave the grounds …
I saw the cops with guns tell everyone to lay down or to leave really
quickly and I realized that something much more serious was going
on.” Student Jamal Albarghouti on CNN
“We heard about the one shooting on the campus and as the
day has been going on there is more and more ... They told us to
stay within the dormitory and not to leave and the outside doors
were locked ... We haven’t left the campus. We are still in
the domitory now”. Clare Harrison, a Briton visiting the campus,
on the BBC
“The first shooting at 7:15 at one dormitory there were only
two confirmed shootings with one fatality. I have also heard rumours
that someone was injured by jumping out of a window ... For the
most part, they have given the go-ahead for students who live off
campus to evacuate … but dorms are on lockdown … everything
is shut down until Wednesday … It’s just awful.”
Virginia Tech student Tom Sakach
“This is a tragedy of monumental proportions. ... I want
to extend my deepest, sincerest and most profound sympathies to
the families of these victims which include students.” Virginia
Tech president Charles Steger
