What Happened to the Land of the Free?

JBS
Thursday, April 10, 2008

Think back for a moment, if you are old enough, to the Reagan era -- the 1980s. Not so very long ago Reagan was declaring the Soviet Union to be an evil empire and was demanding that the Soviets "tear down this wall" they had built in Berlin.

Reagan was right. The Soviet Union was an evil empire. Its citizens were slaves to the regime. There were no Constitutional checks and balances on government. The free press was unknown. The rights and liberties of the people -- those were just pretty myths the Soviet people heard were enjoyed by citizens of America.

How times change. The land of the free and the home of the brave has been destroyed by the inept and anti-American Bush administration. If you doubt that statement, read the latest post from the brilliant Glenn Greenwald. The former lawyer who blogs for Salon takes on both the administration and its apologists and fellow-travelers in the press in his most recent column. For any American who remembers those days past when this nation was a beacon of hope to the oppressed around the world, it is impossible not to be outraged anew by his frank description of the tyrannical behavior by the Bush administration. To wit, referring to press lackey Megan McArdle of The Atlantic and her coverage of former DOJ flunky John Yoo, he writes:

She quite obviously has no idea that the memoranda John Yoo wrote -- legalizing government torture, declaring presidential omnipotence, and suspending the Fourth Amendment inside the U.S. -- are not merely his opinion, but became the official position of the entire Executive Branch of the U.S. Government. She also quite obviously has no idea that he did all of that in close association with the most powerful political officials in the White House, including David Addington, Alberto Gonzales and ultimately Donald Rumsfeld, nor does she have the slightest awareness that the torture-authorizing memoranda were used to brief Gen. Geoffrey Miller, the commander of Guantanamo who then went to Iraq to train the commanders of American prisons in Iraq, including Abu Ghraib, nor that the theories of presidential omnipotence underlying it all remain firmly in place.

The point? We no longer have a free press and we no longer have a government of, by and for the people. Instead, we have ITAR-TASS and the Comintern.

There is, however, a solution, a way to recapture the America that once was. The John Birch Society remains defiantly free of the establishment media. No matter who is in office, no matter what party holds the reigns of power, JBS and its media organs will unblinkingly tell the truth. Moreover, we'll invite our fellow citizens to do something about the problems facing the nation. Specifically, we believe without reservation that America remains the Land of the Brave, and we invite and encourage all the brave souls of this land to join with us to work through Congress to roll back the various totalitarian deprivations the Bush administration has foisted on us these last seven years.

Together we can take America back and make sure it remains the land of the free.
