All UK cops to get tasers

Taser stun guns will next year be routinely issued
to ALL police in England and Wales to combat rising street violence,
The People can reveal.
For the first time they will be used against mobs of drunken
yobs, drug gangs protecting their "turf" or race-hate
hooligans.
The need for action was highlighted yesterday as police used
a Taser to subdue and arrest a knifeman who lunged at a cop in
Newcastle.
At present Tasers can only be issued to trained firearms officers
as an alternative to conventional guns when there is a threat
of death or serious violence.

But Home Secretary Jacqui Smith believes they should be deployed
more often to safeguard cops.
Relaxed regulations covering their use to be piloted in 10 police
areas from next month will be rolled out nationwide in 2008. The
move will delight police chiefs who want the range of weapons
available to officers extended, given soaring gun crime.
The Association of Chief Police Officers said: "There's
a climate of fear on some of our streets. Equipment available
should match the threat."
In yesterday's dramatic attack on Newcastle's Tyne Bridge, a
man brandishing a knife in each hand slashed at a policeman who
was saved from injury by his stab-proof vest.
The officer called for back-up and the man was disarmed with
the use of a stun gun. Police said: "The man lunged at the
officer striking him a number of times on the vest."
A 23-year-old man was questioned in custody yesterday.
