Henri Paul was not supposed to be behind the wheel
of the car in which Diana, Princess of Wales, and her lover Dodi
Fayed were killed, a court has heard.
The inquest into the death of the princess and her partner heard
that Mr Paul, the acting head of security at the Ritz Hotel in
Paris, was told before leaving the hotel that it was not his job
to drive the couple.
Francois Tendil, the night security manager at the hotel, described
how an ill-fated plan was devised to evade the paparazzi by driving
the couple from the back of the hotel, while Mr Fayed's usual
driver, Philippe Dorneau, remained at the front as a decoy.

Mr Tendil said Mr Fayed had been extremely angry at the activities
of the paparazzi, who had followed him and Diana since their arrival
in Paris.
He said Mr Fayed, Mr Paul and two body guards - Trevor Rees and
Kes Wingfield - had decided on the last-minute plan, but that
Mr Fayed had played a key part.
"Due to the situation and what Dodi could see in front of
the hotel, he decided at the last minute that Henri Paul could
drive the car," Mr Tendil said.
"And the bodyguards did agree. Everybody agreed that, I
would like to record that."
When informed about the plan, Mr Tendil said he had challenged
the decision.
"My reaction was that it was not his duty to do so because
we had drivers in the hotel," he told the court.
