An exam board is using electronic tagging devices in a bid to
combat cheating this summer.
Edexcel has also programmed its computer-based marking system to
flag up any unexpectedly good results that could be the product
of cheating by students.
Jerry Jarvis, Edexcel’s managing director, said: “We’re
doing a major trial of new techniques and technologies with the
aim of deterring potential thefts, enabling us to better identify
the source of a lost or stolen paper, and reducing the threat of
fake papers being sold to candidates.”
A number of bags containing exam papers will be fitted with radio-frequency
identification tags, which will be scanned as the bags are dispatched.
After delivery, Edexcel staff will be able to scan the tags to
check whether papers are missing. The tags are similar to those
used on items such as CDs in shops.
After exam papers return for assessment, nine out of 10 are scanned,
digitised and marked online by examiners using Edexcel’s ePen
system.
It flags up any candidates who have performed significantly out
of line with expectations, so that their papers can be re-checked
manually. The system also makes it easier to spot if a group of
students all have the same answers.
