More than 600 tax workers have been caught snooping on personal files, Government admits

More than 600 tax staff have been sacked or disciplined for snooping on personal files, it was revealed today.

Official figures showed that 238 employees were disciplined or dismissed between April 2005, when HM Revenue & Customs was formed, and December 2005.

A further 180 cases occurred in 2006; and 192 were recorded last year.

Treasury minister Jane Kennedy stressed that the department tightly controlled access to citizens' records.
