SWISS RESEARCHERS will release software to enable groups of
ordinary camera cellphones cooperate as smart surveillance networks.
New Scientist reports that the software uses the short-range
wireless protocol Bluetooth to let cellphones share data in order
to create a swarm of CCTV devices.

The researchers, at the Institute for Pervasive Computing in
Zurich, Switzerland, want users and programmers to experiment
with their software, called Facet, and come up with uses for the
technology. They speculate that it might be useful for spotting
intruders in monitored areas or capturing wildlife images, for
two examples.
The developers plan to release Facet as an open source project.
Philipp Bolliger said, "Because of the way we implemented
it, the whole thing will run in Java on virtually any phone you
want." µ
