EU proposing own air passenger
surveillance system

Friday November 16, 2007
First the US did it, now the EU wants to collect information
on air passengers, whether they are coming or going. Under proposals
set for unveiling this Tuesday, as a measure against terrorism,
the European Union would collect personal data on air passengers
travelling to or from the bloc.
The information would be stored for 13 years, according to the
European Commission's draft.
The plan mirrors a scheme put in place by the United States.
Airlines would need to send the information to the first EU state
where a plane is to land. The 19 pieces of personal data on international
air
travellers include phone number, e-mail adress, payment details
and travel agent.
The text will only become law if all the EU countries approve,
and the proposal does not apply to people travelling within the
EU.
