Dial Up FAQ

The dialup number you provide is the same number a friend of mine uses, but she is on Juno, Earthlink, AOL, etc. What's the deal?

You'll find that all nationwide ISPs share dialup access numbers in many cities. Due to network consolidation -- and the resistance of local phone companies to expand infrastructure -- dialup racks are usually housed at local phone company central offices. Over the years large backbone carriers (the uu, te, qw, and st's of the world) have cornered exclusive locations and their positions at the central offices have expanded. Ultimately, as the small local mom-and-pop ISPs got bought out or fell away their central office locations were acquired by these major carriers. These days, when an ISP expands into a new market they are almost always compelled to provision access from one of these major carriers. It's called "peering" or "port leasing". The carriers provide solid networks (for the most part) and they maintain the local dialup machines. The ISPs do everything else. So the result is a huge nationwide footprint for participating ISPs -- without local infrastructure concerns. AOL, Earthlink, and Juno for example, have millions of subscribers respectively, but don't own a single modem. They are entirely made up of network access points.

What is the difference between Dial-up, ISDN and DSL?

ISDN is a digital translation scheme that delivers consistent 64K or
128K connections as opposed to 56K dialup that can vary dramatically
depending on your distance from the local phone switch and quality of the
wiring in between.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) service provides very high speed access --
256K to up to 1500K -- using a standard voice-grade phone circuit.
Availability is limited and also depends on your proximity to the local
phone companies Central Office Switch. There is no extra circuit charge, but
DSL is usually more expensive (about double) than what you would pay for
dialup or ISDN.

DSL FAQ

How does DSL work?

DSL Service uses your existing phone line to carry a high-speed data
signal to your computer.

Does it interfere with my phone?

No. You can talk on the phone and surf the internet at the same time with full performance and all features. (Please note that DSL signals can interfere with Alarm Company Wiring and could experience performance reduction if you have more than five devices connected to the same phone line.)

How Fast Is DSL?

Actual access speeds may vary based on the condition of your phone line, wiring inside of your location, congestion on the network or Internet, the capabilities of Web sites you visit on the Internet, as well as other conditions.

Do I need to have a Second Phone Line Installed?

Our DSL services are provided via line sharing which means your DSL service will be set up on the same line as your voice service. Since there is no need for a second line, there is generally no need for a technician to visit your home or office to complete the installation.

Do I have to Install Any Special Equipment in My Computer?

Most likely, you will not have to add or change any computer equipment other than the DSL Modem (Which we Provide) unless you have an older PC that does not have an Ethernet network interface card (10BaseT NIC). Newer computers often include this card. In the event that you do have an older computer, a card generally can be purchased and installed by a local computer service center. (Please Note: Rovin Net will not install any network cards during the installation process, you must have 10Base-T network cards installed and working prior to self-installation.)

Is there a Minimum Contract Commitment?

A one-year minimum contract is required -- this is standard for all DSL Internet Service Providers.

How Hard is This to Install? Can I do it Myself?

The Covad self-installation kit we send to you has won awards for its straightforward, 1-2-3 step design. If your machine is fairly modern and virus/trojan-free the result is a hassle-free installation experience. After the self installation kit is delivered, usually with 2 weeks of ordering, most customers get their service installed and up and running in 30 minutes or less. Should you run into any difficulty during the installation, simply call our toll-free 24x7 Customer Care Center and an installation expert will provide assistance. If you prefer to have a Covad technician install your service, we can do so for an additional charge.
